How to start with a surf skate



Surf skating is a way of transportation, surfboard-inspired skateboards are making the traditional board/wheeled vehicle more versatile.

Are you interested in surfing but can’t afford traveling to Hawaii or somewhere tropical? Are you looking for a sport that allows you to enjoy nature while keeping up your heart rate? Then surfskate might be something for you.

Surfskating is a type of skating. cruising, carving and surfing down gentle hills. It is an interesting take on the surf culture and a way to merge it with skateboarding. You can fly across town or country roads, keeping up your speed without stopping at red lights.

Surfskating is a growing sport around the world, but especially in Europe it has been gaining popularity recently. There are boards from many different brands, all over the place so you might even see someone doing it near you!

In this article we will discuss how to get started with surfskating, what equipment you need and how to approach it while still having fun instead of breaking the bank.

What Equipment Do You Need?

Let’s get started with discussing some basic gear you would want to have before hitting the streets. The most important thing is obviously your board. There are plenty of options out there, but they all have one thing in common. They are shaped to be stood on while being puddle-friendly at the same time.

Think of this when you compare your skateboard to a surfskate board, they are quite similar in shape but key differences can be found too. The boards are usually quite small with smaller wheelbases which let’s you manoeuver easily. The deck is usually made out of different types of wood but they are also available in composite or plywood to keep the cost down. If you were to compare it to a surfboard, think about the thickness. Most surfskate boards have a width around 8 ¾” and concave decks ranging from 0 mm to 7 mm.

The most important part of the surfskate board is its soft foam wheels, usually around 65-75mm in diameter and different variations of durometer (hardness). Around 90a is considered to be about right for cruising, but softer or harder ones are available too. You can use normal skateboard bearings and normal skateboard hardware, just keep in mind that the trucks need to be somewhat flat so you can stand on it.

If you want to start cruising right away, don’t worry about getting your own custom setup. There are complete boards available from different brands at a reasonable price point which will do the job just fine. Stick with your favorite trucks and bearings.

What shoes should you use?

Skate shoes are essential too, it is pretty much the same as with normal skateboarding if you want to do tricks or go fast. Just try to stay away from loose fitting “skater shoes” because they will end up smelling like cheese soon enough if you wear them for any longer than an hour.

Just like with changing out the wheels, you can also change your trucks and bearings depending on what you want. For park use or cruising around your neighborhood, stock parts work well enough to keep the cost down and make it more sustainable in the long run. If you really like doing tricks and pushing yourself in a skatepark, then go for it.

What kind of surfaces do you prefer?

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s discuss some more specific stuff depending on where and how you like to use it most. If you want to hit the streets and go for a skate through town, keep in mind that roads with heavy traffic will leave scuff marks on your board.

If that doesn’t bother you then go ahead, but if you want to avoid that then opt for sidewalks or pavements when cruising around. To make it more fun and stylish, try making some kicktails like the longboarders do! If you are looking at getting into tricks, there are many skateparks available that can be a lot of fun to skate.

Concrete wave parks or those designed for longboarding are usually set up to mimic those natural waves we surfers know and love so much. If you want to try out boardsports but don’t surf, this might just be the next best thing!

The creation of the surf skate



Carver’s skateboard trucks, handmade in California and developed over many years, fit the surfskate movement. Carver is also the leading company in the surf skate sector, and was the first truck to design this type in 1995. Here is an overview of the main surf skate trucks: Carver C7 – The first and original surf skater truck of Carver, CX and other systems from Miller, Smoothstar, Yow and Slide.

If you are a fan of skateboarding or surfing, you can choose from a wide range of surf skates. Carver Surfskates have some reasonably priced boards like the Yow and Smoothstar, but for those on a budget, consider one of the Carver Surfboards.

On the other hand, if you want to enter the world of surf skating, you can opt for larger boards that allow you to make wider, more controlled swings and offer more stability. These boards are also great for surf training and progressive surfskate maneuvers. This means that with the Miller Long Island Board and G-Truck Surfskates you can carve, cruise and pump with the stable feel and flexibility of a board.

Most surfskates use spring bushings on the front and back of the trucks to provide greater freedom of movement and a more relaxed and surf-like feeling. The rotational dynamics of the surf skate axis enable shorter and more manageable rotations on the axis than a surfboard on a wave, so you can reproduce the movement of surfing even though you never touched a board in your life. Technical surfskating trucks alone have a more limited range of motion than high-end surftraining surfskins.

The CX are great for skate parks and traditional skate tricks because they drive fakie better than other surf skates, and the stability of the truck is more stable than regular skate trucks. Their low truck height, tight springs, limited turning angles and the front truck torsion system make them the most stable and slidable surfskate. Surfskates, which are not based in Munich, consist of curfboards from Munich, Germany’s boards are unique due to their springless design.

Carver Carver C7 Carver and CX Stable Yow Surf. For beginners who want to get into street surfing, we recommend the CX Surfskate Truck due to its stability. The stable CX truck, the C7, offers a similar experience to a normal skateboard and most other surf skates.

There are different types of surfskate truck boards that adapt to different driving environments and styles. If you compare trucks with skateboards, longboards and surfskates, you will notice a noticeable difference. The front of the truck is larger than a normal skateboard or longboard, and the truck of the surfskate truck is mounted on a rotating arm.

A special front push rotates the board so that the rider can shift his weight from the heel to the toe side. In surfing, the board connected to surfing is known as the board deck, the main part of a surfskate where axles and wheels are attached, like a surfboard, except that the front part of the surfboard is called the nose while the back part is the tail.

A surfskate is a skateboard that mimics the movement of a surfboard with the help of a special truck. Surfskate skateboard trucks are designed to perform dynamic pushs and pumps, similar to surfing and attempting to gain speed, for example, by overcoming a loose section of the wave when trying to reach the speed needed to maneuver. A surf skateboard with a special truck gives the feeling of surfing on a snowboard or on land.

The good news is that they are thinking about it and there are adapters on the market that can be mounted on skateboards and trucks to turn traditional skates into surf skates.
